Disc Nutter

How did you discover Disc Golf and
why did it appeal to you?
When I moved to Edinburgh in 1991 I saw a strange game being played
in the Meadows. The next week I was joining in to play Ultimate. Rafi
Freire moved to Edinburgh. As well as teaching Sneeekys how to play
Ultimate properly, he introduced a few of us to Disc Golf. We started
with Ultimate discs on Bruntsfield Links (an early home of ball golf). My
brother Sean, Andy Cotgreave and I went to Mull, hearing there was
a'real course' there. We saw our first golf discs on the wall and
borrowed a few from Guy and Wilf. We then played the course in pouring
rain with 6-foot bracken everywhere. We were crap. But we had great
fun, camped on the course, and did the same thing the next day.
I enjoy most ball-based sports but never because of the movement of
the ball. Disc sports have the usual sports elements. But there is
something special about disc flight. There are so many options, and
so much potential for things going horribly wrong, or just perfect.
In golf, I like the strategy and the time to work out the right shot,
even if it doesn't work out that way. I now enjoy it more than faster,
reaction-based disc sports.
