31 players including 10 locals, students and new
players baked in the Essex sun on Saturday.
Breezy conditions and a 20 hole round made for difficult
scoring with only a handful of players managing
to break below 70. Charlie Mead's 60 set the tone
and gave him an immediate 6 shot lead.
An amended afternoon course avoided the lake holes
where Essex University was holding it's World Sunbathing
Championship heats, but the wind still blew.
Charlie held his lead and Capper closed in a little.
Jester lay second overnight. In the Am division,
Sue and Rob Whitehouse were split by 1 shot. Two
notable rounds came from Alex Anderson who improved
his morning score of 143 by 51 shots and Oli Luton's
62 being only 4 worse than his dad's.
Jester aced the 15th - 'Sculpture' hole.
Sunday morning was hot and humid. Sub 60 rounds
from Capper(56), Ivan(57), Toy(58) and Charlie,
Jester and Tom (59) saw these 6 establish a clear
gap over the rest of the field. Sue took a shot
from Rob Whitehouse to tie up the Ams whilst Dazza
Rose threw a sharp 62 to move within 3.
Semi final rounds - in the Open only 5 from the
6 would make the final. Toy started 2 behind Tom
but a great 28 on the long course, including an
enormous throw to claim longest drive, ensured he
held on by a stroke.
In the Ams Sue dropped off the pace and Rob had
4 shots over the Dazzler going into the final 6.
Am final- Rob W, Dazza,
Gwyn, Sue and local dark horse Bob Brook playing
only his third tournament.
There is only 1 word for it- Rob CHOKED, and lost
on the second playoff hole to the Dazzle. Gwyn took
third by a stroke maintaining his impressive form
this year.
Charlie couldn't lose
the Open and deservedly won by 9 over Ivan. Capper
and Tom tied up third.
Bob Brook won BDGA
membership as the highest placed non member.
Many thanks to Toy
for td'ing, Guy Luard for sorting out the camping
and Donald Ross for providing 3 of the trophies.
