New season. New winners.
A great turnout of
40 made it the biggest ever Frostbreaker!
With Derek Robins
and Oz Friere on holiday and Charlie Mead mis-firing,
it was Liam Young and Rafi Friere who emerged from
the field to battle for first place.
Liam finally won it
despite some hesitation on the final hole. In the
Amateur Division, Colin Eagles won comfortably.
Thanks to you all
for making the event so much fun.

A great start to the campaign and one of the
most keenly contested tournament I can remember
for a while.
Many players showed
glimpses of form but consistency was lacking, consequently
there were a lot of see-saw scores.
After the last round
there was only 5 shots separating 3rd position to
10th position.
Liam and Raf were
the only Open players to keep it together for the
weekend. I was playing with Rafi when he set the
new course record (54) on the Ancient - very tidy.
Both players were tied for the lead going into the
6 hole final. Liam had a plane to catch so was keen
to finish the job as quickly as possible. He played
the golf in the final and won deservedly by 2 shots.
The other performance
of note was a 3rd place for New City Skimmer, Rob
Capper. This was Rob's best finish in a Tour. The
self proclaimed 'Welsh Git' played solid golf and
the b*ggar beat me by one shot!
There were some impressive
performances in the Am Division, most notably Colin
Eagles, Darren Rose, Rob Whitehouse and Gwyn Wilden.
The courses were as
challenging as ever. The new holes have not made
things any easier for players and the flow of the
course has improved considerably.
This tournament was
also the last chance for UK players to qualify for
this Summer's European
Championships at Whitcombe. There were two places
up for grabs, to be given to the two highest placed
non-automatic qualifiers. Rob Capper was the first
to qualify with his 3rd place finish. The second
qualifying spot had to be decided by playoff. Spencer
Worth and Neil Halliday were tied for 5th in the
tournament. The Euro place was decided on the 2nd
playoff hole, with Spencer winning.
Discology
sponsored the Longest Drive and Closest To The Pin
- won by Bruce Webber and Rob Capper.
Friday and Saturday
night were very entertaining. Everyone was buzzing
to be at Whitcombe and the pubs/restaurants were
as welcoming as ever.
Great to see so many
people down for the first tournament, let's hope
these numbers continue for other events.
Closing Comments
From Open Division Winner, Liam Young
Scuttler and I made it to Bristol airport check-in
with 15 minutes to spare. Thanks to everyone who
moved things along quickly at the end, especially
Toby and the other finalists.
Because I had to rush
off quickly I was only able to thank Toby (TD) in
front of a small group in the house when he gave
me the trophy. So thanks again Toby for another
great weekend.
Colchester may be
the oldest basket course we have (?) but I think
of Whitcombe as the home of British disc golf. It's
always a pleasure to walk around those hills with
friends regardless of how the golf is going. Good
luck to Toby in keeping it going and I'm sure all
visiting players will be impressed at Europeans
this year. The course
workers are improving on something that is already
a pleasure to play on.
I also believe we'll
be good hosts for the European Championships. There
were a few examples over the weekend of players
'penalising' themselves, or at least not making
life easier for themselves, in rule interpretations.
This shows that we play in the right spirit and
can make this a focus of the European Championships.
I need a final mention
for Rafi Friere who is off to Australia sometime
soon. Most of you probably don't know that it was
Raf who really introduced disc golf to Edinburgh
and made me get my first Aviar XD. With the two
of us a few shots clear in the final, it was a bit
like going round Corstorphine Hill in Edinburgh,
with bigger hills. I can't
really use a master/apprentice analogy though because
he's younger than me.
Liam.
