Review by Jester
Twenty three players gathered at
the Green Park Centre, Aylesbury for the Bongo's
first BDGA Tour event. The Green Park Centre does
not have a permanent golf course so the baskets
were brought in for the weekend only.
The Centre is in a beautiful setting and the terrain
offers plenty of interesting features for some entertaining
golf holes.
The
Green Park Centre hosted its first disc golf event
in March 2002 (BDGA Doubles Matchplay), also managed
by the Bongos. After this successful Spring tournament
some green keeping work was required to ensure the
original twelve, the 'Saturday Course', was still
playable. Of the original 12 only the final hole
had become too overgrown to be unplayable, so was
redesigned and renamed in honour of Her Majesty
The Queen's Golden Jubilee - 'Luvlee Jublee'.
For
this tournament a second twelve, the 'Sunday Course',
was designed. The Sunday course shared five holes
with the Saturday Course, modifying one and introducing
six new holes. Current affairs influenced a few
hole names - 'Bend it like Beckam' and 'Spiderman'.
The variety of holes between the two courses meant
players would need a wide range of different shots
to succeed.
Saturday
- Rounds 1 and 2
Windy Friday night rain cleared to calm Saturday
morning sunshine and the first round got underway.
Two rounds of 24 were to be played (twice round
the Saturday Course). In the Open Division Derek
Robins showed great form and set the early pace
with an excellent 64 (course par for two twelve's
76) with Jester Wilson close behind on 67, Tom Soper
on 71 and Richard Sampson on 73. In the Amateur
Division, John Massey carded an impressive 71. With
Sue Underwood shooting 72 (including a great run
of four 2's in a row) and Robin Ailes on 73 it was
tight at the top. Many players who may have been
expected to place higher up the leaderboard found
the tight, technical course quite testing, carding
surprisingly high scores.
The
second round of 24 saw Rbbins equal his morning
round with another 64, meanwhile Jester lost ground
shooting 73 but Soper and Sampson improved by a
stroke each to 70 and 72 respectively. In the Ams,
Massey slipped 2 strokes to 73 but Rob Capper improved
6 strokes to 70. Overnight the top of the leaderboard
was as follows:
Op - Derek Robins 128
Op - Jester Wilson 140
Op - Tom Soper 141
Op - Ivan Bromage - 144
Am - John Massey 144
Op - Richard Sampson 145
Am - Rob Capper 146
Op - Bud Tilton 147
Am - Sue Underwood 152
Am - Bruce Webber 153
Am - Robin Ailes 156
Am - Gwyn Wilden 158
Saturday
Night Players Dinner
The local Rising Sun pub (only 10 minutes walk,
or 20 minutes stagger from the course) provided
the players with an excellent evening meal, plenty
of liquid refreshment and a welcome rest after 48
holes of golf! It was only a matter of time before
the dartboard came into play and several games of
killer passed the night away.
Sunday
- Rounds 3 and 4+finals
Sunday morning was windy, overcast and some intermittent
drizzle was falling as the third round started.
This time 24 holes were played on the Sunday course.
Slightly longer than the Saturday course (par 80
for two 12's), Robins again showed he had the measure
of the course shooting a superb 14 under 66. Jester
had an erratic 79 while Sampson, Soper and Bud Tilton
both managed 77. In
the Ams, Massey kept it together with a 78 and Bruce
Webber with a 82. Meanwhile Capper, Robin Ailes
and Gwyn Wilden were inseparable on 83 a piece.
A
filling baked potato, chilli and cheese lunch later,
the fourth round (12 holes of the Sunday course
par 40) got underway in heavy wind and rain. In
these conditions any player who could hold their
game together would surely gain some ground. Robins
and Sampson did just that with rounds of 37 while
Jester and Soper managing 38 each. Battling for
2nd position, Jester and Soper traded birdies -
Jester scoring well on the short, tight par 3's
(including a run of four 2's), Soper taking shots
back with pin-point approaches to birdie the long,
open par 4's. In
the Ams, Massey took a 42, but an excellent 38 went
to Gwyn Wilden playing some of his best golf of
the weekend in the worst conditions.
With
all the fourth round scores in, the division leaders
looked like this:
Op - Derek Robins 231
Op - Tom Soper 256
Op - Jester Wilson 257
Op - Richard Sampson 259
Op - Bud Tilton 264
Am - John Massey 264
Am - Rob Capper 270
Am - Bruce Webber 276
Am - Gwyn Wilden 279
Am - Robin Ailes 280
Am - Sue Underwood 281
With
Robins 24 shots clear going into the 6 hole final
in was unlikely he would lose his grip, but the
race for second was very tight with only 3 shots
separating Soper, Jester and Sampson. Due to Massey
being tied with Tilton he took the option to play
in the Open Final and settle 5th place. In the Am
final with only two shots separating Wilden, Ailes
and Underwood a tense finish was on the cards.
In
the Open final (6 holes, par 20) Jester and Tom
played as they had in the previous rounds, Jester
taking shots out of Soper sinking 2's on the par
3's and Soper taking them back on the par 4's. Both
players finished with a 19 as did Robins. Sampson
turned on the style for the gallery to throw an
excellent 17 moving him up from 4th to tie with
Jester in 3rd place. Experience was on the side
of Tilton who managed to beat Massey by a shot,
20 to 21 respectively, to take 5th place.
The
Am Final played the same 6 holes (par 20). Unusually,
the leading Am player (John Massey) did not feature
in the Am final as he was playing so well he had
made it into the Open Division final. Anyhow, this
meant that an extra player from the Am division
qualified for a taste of final action. Rob Capper
was comfortably holding second place in the division
behind Massey and had a clear lead over players
competing for 3rd place. Capper toasted the rest
of the final throwing -2 (18). Webber blew out a
little to let the others catch up. Gwyn Wilden kept
up his good form to finish equal 3rd with
Webber; Underwood and Ailes finished tied overall
for 5th.
For
many people this was the first time they had played
Green Park. The feedback suggests that the course
was really well received. In Robins closing speech,
he complimented the course and highlighted that
the course had a great blend of holes requiring
a wide variety of shots.
Special

The Bongos would like to give special thanks to
those who helped out preparing the course and also
to players who brought baskets - Rob Capper, Darren
Rose, Richard Clegg, Del Robins, Bristol Acers and
